In Wyoming, Mexican poly-drug smuggling organizations control the distribution of methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana. Domestic smugglers are supplied by distributors in Colorado, states along the southwest border, and Mexico. In recent years, meth has evolved into the illegal drug of choice in Wyoming. Club drugs, such as Ecstasy, have also increased in popularity. Marijuana is frequently abused throughout the state of Wyoming. Cocaine is accessible to consumers, but is less popular than meth. In Wyoming, the demand for heroin is not especially high.

Wyoming cocaine costs have stayed consistent, but the demand for cocaine has decreased in recent years. Ounce amounts of cocaine are accessible in and around Cheyenne and Laramie. Crack can be encountered in Wyoming but not in substantial amounts.

Mexican heroin is accessible in Wyoming, although it does not present a substantial law enforcement issue. The majority of the heroin encountered in Wyoming derives from sources in Colorado or Utah.

In Wyoming, methamphetamine is the most severe drug threat. In recent years, meth arrests have surpassed arrests for all other controlled substances. However, clandestine meth lab apprehensions have begun to decrease. Meth abuse is of tremendous concern to Wyoming law enforcement. This is attributed to meth’s association with violent crime, domestic violence, and child abuse.

Club drugs, including GHB and Ecstasy can be detected in Wyoming, with the majority of these drugs derive from supply sources in Colorado. Although not as popular as GHB and Ecstasy, LSD and psilocybin mushrooms are considered popular “recreational drugs” in college environments.

In Wyoming, marijuana is frequently abused. The majority of the marijuana found is Mexican produced, but higher potency marijuana from British Columbia, Canada, can be encountered also. Further, marijuana is produced in remote outdoor regions of Wyoming and in more limited indoor grows.

Valium and semi-synthetic narcotic painkillers (e.g. Vicodin, Dilaudid, and Percocet) have been cited as being among the most frequently diverted and abused pharmaceuticals in the state of Wyoming. Regular techniques of diversion include illicit sale and distribution by health care professionals and workers, and doctor shopping. Consequently, prescription drug diversion is a concern in Wyoming.

The DEA Mobile Enforcement Teams is a cooperative program with state and local law enforcement counterparts that was implemented in 1995 following the tremendous issue of drug-related violent crime in cities across the country. Since the implementation of the MET Program, 473 deployments have been finished countrywide, causing 19,643 arrests. Since the implementation of the program, Wyoming has had one MET deployment; specifically, in Park County.

The DEA Regional Enforcement Teams is a program created to augment present DEA division resources by honing in on drug organizations operating in America where there is a shortage of enough domestic drug law enforcement. This program was implemented in 1999 following the threat of drug smuggling organizations that have structured networks of units to perform drug smuggling operations in smaller, non-traditional smuggling locations in America. Since January 2005, there have been 27 deployments countrywide, and one deployment in the U.S. Virgin Islands, causing 671 arrests. In Wyoming, there have been no RET deployments.
