South Carolina Drug Alcohol Addiction Recovery and Treatment Programs and Centers

South Carolina was once viewed as a “consumer state”, but has since evolved into a “source state” for illegal drugs. South Carolina is growingly cited as a transshipment corridor for all types of illicit drugs and drug proceeds. There is rising evidence of organizational operation extending to main distribution hubs, including New York City, Southern Florida, Southern Texas/Mexico and Southern California.

From Mexico and the southwest border states, smugglers board I-20 and I-85 to distribute northeastern states with cocaine, marijuana, heroin, and methamphetamine. Powder cocaine, crack cocaine, and meth are the primary illicit drug threats in South Carolina. Investigations are becoming more complicated, extending over many statewide and nationwide jurisdictions.

Powder cocaine and crack cocaine abuse have long persisted as South Carolina’s main drug threat. Notably, methamphetamine poses a slow but consistently rising threat in the northern regions of South Carolina; specifically, Greenville and Florence. Meth apprehensions in the last year have seen an elevation. During the last year, 100 clandestine meth labs were apprehended in North Carolina, showing a 6 percent rise over the prior year. The majority of the illegal drugs are transported to and through South Carolina in small and mid size passenger automobiles.

Mexican smugglers and Mexican DTOs are still playing a growingly dominant role in the importation and distribution of illicit drugs within the state of South Carolina. Mexican poly-drug organizations are the biggest foreign threat in South Carolina, mainly smuggling in cocaine, meth, marijuana, and heroin.

Marijuana, the most widespread illicit drug of abuse in South Carolina, mainly derives from Mexico through I-20. Interstate 26 and I-95 are frequently used routes for smugglers honing in on the Charleston, Florence and Myrtle Beach regions. African-American DTOs, with supply sources in Atlanta and Miami, also supply marijuana to the Charleston metropolitan region. Mexican and local varieties are easily accessible. BC Bud (high-grade) marijuana is also accessible, but to a smaller degree. Use and abuse remains extensive, partially due to the great amount of college students throughout South Carolina. Smugglers use vehicles, tractor-trailers, commercial air, trains, buses, and express parcel services to import marijuana from Mexico through California. A smaller amount of marijuana is domestically grown.

Cocaine and crack cocaine remain the most frequently abused drugs throughout South Carolina. Though cocaine was the most apprehended illegal drug in North Carolina in the past year, it was also the sole illegal drug showing a decline in apprehensions compared to the prior year. This phenomenon is because of the joint efforts of local and international law enforcement entities intercepting the cocaine movement through Mexico into America. Because it has become growingly hard to ship into America, some smugglers are supplementing their income by selling other drugs, including marijuana, Ecstasy and prescription drugs.

Powder cocaine is frequently transformed into crack after reaching South Carolina. Mexican DTOs control smuggling in South Carolina utilize different trafficking strategies to include independently owned vehicles, commercial tractor-trailers utilizing I-85, I-26, I-95 and I-20.
