Florida Drug Alcohol Addiction Recovery and Treatment Programs and Centers
Florida is a main area for international drug trafficking and money laundering organizations. It is also a major thoroughfare for cocaine and heroin shipment to northeastern America and Canada. Florida has over 8,000 miles of coastline, which allows nearly unlimited access and opportunities for drug trafficking organizations to utilize maritime conveyances to traffic drugs.
In Florida, cocaine is the main drug threat. The drug is trafficked through different conveyances, including commercial cargo vessel, private pleasure craft, cargo and passenger aircraft, and automobiles. Cocaine originates from South America but reaches Florida straight from those sources, or through the American Southwest Border with Mexico. Recently there has been a marked rise in Mexican organizations shipping and distributing large amounts of cocaine from Mexico to the far south of Palm Beach County.
Cocaine deriving straight from South American sources, instead of to the American Southwest Border, is destined for distribution to eastern America and Canada. After the cocaine is shipped into Florida, some of it is consumed locally (in Miami); however, most of it is destined for distribution to other Florida regions and outside Florida. There is a local market for cocaine in Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach; however, a lot of it designated for crack conversion.
South Florida is the main American point of entry for South American heroin. Miami International Airport is the primary venue of importation for heroin. In several cases, heroin is commingled with cocaine shipments and trafficked via legitimate cargo, including flowers deriving from Colombia. Cruise ship passengers and crewmembers are also being used to traffic heroin into South Florida and this is typically achieved via body carrying strategies.
Most of the heroin entering Florida is destined for markets along the east coast of America; this is because Florida does not have a substantial heroin abuse issue. However, heroin is a dominant threat in the Orlando area, with most of the heroin in central Florida being originated in South American. The heroin encountered in southwest Florida and the Tampa regions derive from sources in Miami, Orlando and New York City. Most heroin distribution and smuggling organizations have connections with Colombia and New York, and remain active throughout Florida. When the heroin enters Florida, it is shipped out of state through automobiles, buses and trains to northeast America. Despite the fact that Florida does not have a high heroin abuse rate, the January-June 2006 Interim Report of the Florida Medical Examiners reflects that Fort Lauderdale had the most reported incidents of heroin-related deaths, followed by Miami and St. Petersburg, respectively.
Methamphetamine has affected most of Florida’s 67 counties and use is abundant. The 2006 Interim Report indicates that there were 58 methamphetamine-related deaths throughout Florida. Methamphetamine is shipped into Florida in multi-pound quantities by Mexican drug smuggling organizations based along the Southwest Border and California. The methamphetamine produced in Texas and California super labs is shipped into Florida along the Interstate 10 corridor. A new trend has recently developed, which includes the distribution of crystal meth from Atlanta area sources. There has been a substantial rise in crystal meth use on the South Florida club scene.
