Arkansas Drug Alcohol Addiction Recovery and Treatment Programs and Centers

In Arkansas, the accessibility and drug abuse rate remain high coinciding with the smuggling of methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana (the drugs of choice), for local use and distribution. Though smuggling strategies include all forms of shipment, the largest amounts of drugs are apprehended on the highways through interdiction programs. Every year, tens of thousands of pounds of marijuana and hundreds of kilograms of cocaine are apprehended on Arkansas’ interstates, especially Interstate 40. Most substantial apprehensions include tractor-trailers, although private vehicles account for a substantial percentage of total apprehensions, especially methamphetamine seizures. Substantial amounts of drugs are also apprehended from other forms of shipments including commercial air and bus service.

Crack cocaine and powder cocaine remain substantial and long-term issues in Arkansas, particularly in the inner cities. Although cocaine use supercedes methamphetamine use, it is the primary concern of law enforcement authorities considering its effect on communities in terms of violent crime, such as homicides, mainly by street gangs. The easy accessibility of cocaine and the street gangs movement beyond traditional areas of operation have resulted in the spread of crack to many suburban and rural regions. Crack’s dynamite growth and dominance is related to the drug’s wide accessibility, low cost, simplicity of conversion from powdered cocaine hydrochloride, and its addictive ingredients. Statistics of crack cocaine abuse are high in the black communities. Little Rock, Texarkana, El Dorado, Hot Springs, and Dumas are distribution points for crack cocaine. Cocaine is shipped into Arkansas in powder and crack form. Powder cocaine generally arrives in multi-kilogram amounts and crack arrives in multi-ounce or kilogram amounts.

In Arkansas, drug law enforcement agencies do not see heroin use as a substantial issue. Heroin shipping patterns in central Arkansas are hard to identify because there have been minimal investigations of this form. The few tar heroin that is found in central Arkansas seems to be shipped into Arkansas by the Mexican trafficking organizations, which are already in existence. Recently, the DEA Little Rock District Office apprehended a small quantity, specifically, one-gram, of tar heroin originating in the Los Angeles area. This heroin had been transported to Little Rock via a parcel route. Baltimore, Maryland has been identified as a supply city of gram amounts of Colombian heroin found in Little Rock. The heroin in this case was also transported to the receiver through the mail.

In less than ten years, methamphetamine has risen from an issue restricted to the Southwest and Pacific areas of America to Arkansas’ main drug of concern. Arkansas is finding locally produced methamphetamine and the importation of methamphetamine, which is produced in Mexico. Not only does Arkansas’ rural landscape provide the perfect setting for illegal manufacturing, but the wide accessibility of precursor chemicals also contributes to the simplicity of manufacturing methamphetamine. Criminal groups are obtaining thousands of cases of pseudoephedrine through wholesalers and utilize sophisticated strategies to illicitly transport (at a considerable profit) pseudoephedrine to methamphetamine producers.

In Arkansas, Ecstasy is the most prevalent and popular club drug. Other perilous drugs rising in popularity and demand throughout the state include LSD, OxyContin and GHB. These harmful substances are frequently encountered and remain the drugs of choice at raves and college hangouts throughout Arkansas, particularly in the highly populated regions of Arkansas.
